Effects of chlorhexidine toothpaste on dental plaque, gingivitis and tooth enamel extrinsic staining development in orthodontic patients

Abstract

This blind and randomized controlled trial analyzed the chlorhexidine dentifrices in relation to dental plaque, gingivitis and enamel extrinsic staining development. Patients in fixed orthodontic therapy used the following dentifrices: Group A: Sorriso Fresh Crystal Mint®, 1100 ppm F (NaF) - Kolynos of Brazil Ltda; Group B: 1100 ppm F (NaF) and 0,75% of chlorhexidine - FGM®, Joinville; Group C: 1100 ppm F (NaF) and 0,50% of chlorhexidine - FGM®, Joinville. At baseline, after 6, 12 and 24 weeks, clinical examinations were carried out. A questionnaire concerning the opinions about the product was also applied. The gingivitis, bleeding and plaque data were tested by ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc tests.
