Abstract

The purpose of this post-doctoral project is to develop new communication techniques for wireless networks by using methods from the areas of network coding and multiuser information theory. The work will be based on the "compute-and-forward" approach, a new paradigm in the area of cooperative communications whose essence is to harness interference rather than avoid it, as in conventional protocols. Our main goal is to develop new codes and effcient decoding techniques that can provably realize part of the impressive gains promised by the compute-and-forward approach. To that end, it will be necessary to first extend the compute-and-forward approach in order to incorporate more realistic models, as well as practical limitations of transmitters and receivers. The complete system will be compared with conventional systems through both theoretical analysis and simulations. Potential applications of this project include the areas of wireless mesh networks and sensor networks.
