Abstract

Green Chemistry is the use of Chemistry or Chemical Engineering to prevent pollution. Besides being well spread abroad since the 90s, Green Chemistry is still underdeveloped in Brazil, with multidisciplinary research in this field being practically incipient. The developing of alternative solvents to the traditional ones is one of the research areas of Green Chemistry. Among these alternatives, supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2-sc) is one of the most promising, because it is cheap, widely available, nontoxic, odorless, not flammable, recyclable and easily removed from the final product, besides having an accessible critical point (Pc=73.8 bar and Tc=31.1C). Its solubilizing capabilities however are very limited, restricted to apolar compounds. Ionic liquids also appeared as excellent green solvents because of their extremely low vapor pressures, but they do not have CO2-sc limitations in solubilizing power. In the present project it is propposed the obtention of new ionic liquids to be used in conjugation with supercritical carbon dioxide, improving the solubilizing capabilities of the later.
