Abstract

The application of miniplates revolutionized the treatment of mandibular and maxillary fractures in humans, but in veterinary medicine this method is still restricted since only two clinical reports with dogs and cats were published abroad. Some experimental works in dogs evaluated the use of 2.0mm miniplates for the repair of mandibular osteotomies, however we have not found experimental studies about this surgery in cats. In this study our objective is to evaluate the use of 2,0 mm miniplate in cats by radiographic, macroscopic and histologic exams. Twelve cats will be submitted to unilateral mandibular osteotomy stabilized with 2.0 miniplate and divided into 2 groups. In group A, the osteotomy will be performed on mandibular body, between 2nd premolar and first molar. In group B, the osteotomy will be performed on the mandibular angle, behind the first molar. Cats will be euthanized at 12 weeks postoperative. Radiographs performed immediately after surgery and at the end of the study, i.e., after 12 weeks postoperative will be analyzed. The oblique lateral and dorsoventral views will be taken. The macroscopic aspect of the operated and unoperated hemimandibles will be analyzed. In the histologic exam, the kind of tissue filling the osteotomy site will be identified to verify the presence or absence of bone union. Fisher’s exact test will be used to compare data between groups. The histological sections of both operated and unoperated hemimandibles will be observed and a descriptive analysis will be done.
