Abstract

Emission computed tomography (ECT) is one of two main non-invasive modalities to obtain images of physiological process inside the human body (the other is nuclear magnetic resonance). In ECT, a static image that represents a given time interval of the process is reconstructed. Dynamic ECT is the reconstruction of a temporal image sequence of the process, using the same emission data. The dynamic sequence allows a deeper the study of the metabolism involved, also it opens the possibility of determining the transfer rates of the metabolized compound between different compartments (plasma, tissues, and others). As an example, studies of dynamic PET (positron emission tomography) with [18F]2-desoxi-2-fluor-D-glucose (FDG) and H152O are used to measure the metabolism of the glucose in the cerebral blood flux, respectively. However, dynamic PET reconstruction leads to complex numerical, computational and modeling problems to be solved. In this research proposal we will work on some of these problems in ECT, with emphasis in the PET case.
