Abstract

This research intends to continue the study of the initial work of Camilo Castelo Branco (1851-1856), which had already started in 2007 under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Paulo Motta de Oliveira. In this moment, we aim at looking for more evidences of how the writer consolidated his novels, dialoging with the European model of novel in vigor at that time, and enroll the most prominent aspects of this first part of his work. This study will be based on artistic-literary references that were made, in the literary paratexts and in the narrators' comments, in order to link them to a set of elements that enable a more profound study of the novels from this first phase as well as of Camilo Castelo Branco's audience.
