Abstract

This project's objective is to delineate the profile of communicative development and of symbolic play in normal children, and then compare their performance with that of children with hearing impairment aiming at verifying the possible meaningful differences of performance in terms of communicative abilities and symbolic play. Twenty children with normal hearing ability will be selected for Group I. Group II will be formed by ten children with hearing impairment, aging 0-4, presenting profound and severe sensorineural degree and pre-lingual. Behavioral observation protocol will be applied, contemplating aspects referring to communicative abilities of expression, of comprehension, and of symbolic play proposed by Zorzi & Hage, 2004. The individuals will be assessed and the session will be observed and video recorded. The situation will involve interaction with toys and with an adult (evaluator) to enable to trace a profile of the children’s communicative abilities and of the symbolic schemes of development. Later, the videotapes will be analyzed by two observers to allow a detailed survey of behaviors related to communicative and cognitive aspects of each child, according to the observation outline. Results will be analyzed and submitted to statistical analysis. (AU)
