Abstract

The use of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) provides good outcomes in relationship to side effects, mainly postoperative nausea and vomiting. However, total costs of TIVA may be higher when compared with inhalational anesthesia. With respect to all other aspects, for example, intraoperative and postoperative complications, most studies show no differences between the two anesthetic techniques or they do not reach statistical power for such a conclusion. Therefore, and considering that most of the researches refer to very specific types of surgery and age without a division of the sample population studied, it becomes relevant to hold a retrospective study in elderly patients operated at the Hospital of the Botucatu Medical School, UNESP, from 1990 to 2009. According to World Health Organization, in countries like Brazil, the elderly are those individuals over 60 years. Among a surgical population aged over 60 years, it will be compared the performance, in Recovery Room (RR), of the patients submitted to TIVA and inhalational anesthesia, as well as their time recovery and intraoperative and postoperative (RR) complications.
