Abstract

The conventional Charpy impact test is an established mechanical test in the scientific and industrial environment. Its function is to determine the total energy absorbed to cause a complete fracture of a notched specimen, standardized according to ASTM E-23. However, the overall energy absorbed has a very limited value. It is usually is not accepted as a quantitative indicator of the material's fracture resistance. Thus, by means of appropriate instrumentation, the amount of information obtained can be increased by using the classic Charpy impact test. This study instruments Charpy-V specimens and the pendular hammer and then compares the force-time signals obtained by both transducers after impact loading.
