Abstract

The commercialization of knowledge produced by researchers from Brazilian universities reveals a new role within the growth and economic development. In developed countries it is common the maintenance of a department of research and development by the private sector. In Brazil, on the other hand, the more competitive sectors of the industry rely heavily on results of work undertaken by researchers working at the "state-of-the- art". The university-industry interactions may generate positive effects, such as increased productivity due to additional resources. On the other hand, can change the kind of publications to applied science, which serve the private sector, or even decrease the dedication of researchers to academic activities. These relationships between companies and researchers can be made possible through, for example, foundations, joint ventures and technology incubators. There is evidence that such partnerships are characterized by a virtuous cycle of benefits bi-directional. A review of empirical literature indicates that other variables also influence academic productivity, such as gender, age, hierarchical position and department of the doctorate degree. This project proposes to estimate the impact of university-industry relationship in the amount and nature of the scientific production. There will be a model for panel data, which will be tabulated with the help of data collected in the Directory of Research Groups of the CNPq and information obtained in the Lattes Platform for the period 2000 to 2008. The academic publications and citations are drawn from the database of the Institute for Scientific Information.
