Abstract

The target of this study is to evaluate the structure of two populations of black-faced lion tamarins (Leontopithecus caissara) in the State of Paraná. The construction of a navigation channel within the geographic range of this primate species in 1953 apparently blocked genetic interchange between populations from mainland and Superagüi Island. Both mainland and island population size are quite reduced, what may enhance the pervasive effects of the genetic drift and inbreeding. The management plan for lion tamarins recommends translocation of groups as a tool for reestablishing gene flux. Such conservation effort will certainly be more successful if accompanied by genetic investigations. We aim to determine the genetic variation within and between populations and identify the dispersal pattern between groups of the same population. Studies on congeneric species have found a higher frequency of dispersal events performed by males than by females as well as a high proportion of dispersal events resulting in genetic contribution to future generations. However, it is unknown whether L. caissara follow similar patterns. We will use blood and fur samples that have been already collected and primers that have been isolated for Leontopithecus species.
