Abstract

The fishery of deep-sea crabs, Chaceon, is traditionally carried out in many parts of the world and more recently in Brazil. The esteem potential of the Brazilian supplies is immense. So, to the correct use of the existing potential will be necessary to transpose some obstacles. One of them is the difficulties to identify precisely the existing species in the Brazilian coast. This basic information is essential to the management. Without this, it is impossible to developed a sustainable fishery. The processing of crabs (e.g., triturated meat and broths) on board the boats is an additional obstacle to the identification of species and to the resources management. On this way, it becomes necessary to evaluate the diversity of the Chaceon in Brazil through the morphological and molecular information; to develop molecular tools that facilitate the specimen identification already processed. The results will supply the bases of a sustainable management and exploration of the resources. (AU)
