Abstract

Language is a code, a stipulated and arbitrary system of signs used to communicate and express ideas. Language functions consist of interaction and regulation between speakers and listeners. The kinds of messages one uses to make himself understood are called linguistics abilities. These abilities may be verbal and non-verbal. The aim of this study is to examine the profile of these verbal communicative abilities in stuttering individuals, that is, individuals with break on the continuous and soft flow of the speech production, not being able to make themselves understood. Thirty stuttering subjects, fifteen adults and fifteen children will participate in the study. A data setting protocol based on verbal communicative abilities described by Lopes (2000) was utilized to verify such abilities. Procedures will be recorded on a video cassette and mini disc for further transcription and analysis. A quantitative and qualitative data analysis will be performed. After filling out the protocol the verbal communicative abilities of the subjects will be submitted to general analysis according to the following perspectives: adults will be analyzed through the examiner and their own perspective. Children will be analyzed through the parents’ and examiner’s perspective. A general analysis, comparing the different ways of data collection was also performed following the same pattern of the former analysis. (AU)
