Evaluation of general and oral-health related quality of life among carers of Parkinson's disease patients in São José dos Campos, Brazil

Abstract

Parkinson's disease is a chronic neuron-degenerative disorder of unknown etiology, which is very prevalent among the elderly. Recent previews indicate that the incidence of this disorder should rise in the next years. So, a high number of carers will be necessary in the next future for the Parkinson's disease patients. An important behavior of these carers is how they care of their own oral health, since the carer should use their own habits to take care of the patient. Considering that, the aim of this project is to evaluate the general and oral health-related quality of life among 80 carers in São José dos Campos, Brazil (power sample = 91.47%). The Medical Outcomes Study 36 - Item Short Form (SF-36), previously translated to Portuguese and validated to Brazilian culture, will be used to evaluate general quality of life. The Oral Health Impact Profile shortened (OHIP-14), also translated and validated, will be applied to evaluate oral health-related quality of life. Some other important data related to the carer will also be noted. The answers will be tabulated and statistically analyzed. If there is a normal distribution of the data from OHIP-14 and SF-36, Pearson's correlation and Correlation tests will be used to verify possible correlations among them. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) will also be used. If there is no normal distribution, similar non-parametric tests should be used, as Spearman correlation test, Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney, depending on the quantity of the answers levels on the qualitative variables (gender, scholarship, etc).
