Abstract

Understanding the representations African-Brazilian, through of book Úrsula by Maria Firmina dos Reis. Úrsula is considering the masterpiece of writer, written in 1859. Analysing how the book deals with racial unity and gender in particular the female character's mother Susan. Through this analysis, the aim is to understand the representations of slavery society of Maranhão in nineteenth century, through the eyes of the writer Maria Firmina. (AU)
