Abstract

The project expresses the continuity of my studies about the French intellectual field in the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century (1890-1910). More specifically, I intend to study the so-called "field of the social studies" emphasizing his "free" pole, that means the non-academic institutions composed by schools, journals and intellectuals that were in opposition to the durkheimian school and adopted different theories and practices in that field. My intention is to make an study of institutions and "free intellectuals" life styles, articulating the relationship to other types of power and elites - particularly the economic and the politic ones - so as to the groups inside the French University. Also I intend to analyze the different social and intellectual positions and oppositions in the field of social sciences such as the academic and non-academic groups; law and engineering areas versus literary and scientific areas; economic bourgeoisie versus intellectual media classes. Theses oppositions are important cause than can be a part of the explanation for the adoption of one or another sociological theory. As the social studies at non-academic institutions were produced by authors apparently isolated and with heterogeneous trajectories, four institutions were chosen as they placed the most solid activities: the Revue Internationale de Sociologie, the Revue de Synthèse Historique, the Collège Libre des Sciences Sociales and the École des Hautes Études Sociales.
