Abstract

The trans-sialidase from Trypanosoma cruzi is involved in parasite invasion and defense. This project will involve the synthesis of substrate analogues to aid structure-function studies with a view to developing therapeutic ligands. Progress will be helped significantly by a collaborative approach involving Professor Rob Field (carbohydrate chemistry and enzymology, St Andrews), Professor Sérgio Schenkman (biochemistry and microbiology, Sao Paulo) and Professor Garry Taylor (protein crystallography, St. Andrews) which brings together complementarity of techniques and a breadth expertise.
