Abstract Previously our study with barks hydroalcoholic extract from Dipteryx alata Vogel showed an antiophidian property against the neuromuscular blockade induced by Bothrops jararacussu snake venom. Our objectives are: 1) To obtain extracts of different polarities (hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol) from barks of D. alata; 2) To identify the extract responsible by antineurotoxic action of two crude venoms: Bothrops jararacussu e Crotalus durissus terrificus, under myographical and histological parameters; 3) To obtain the fractions from active extract and to identify the compound(s); and 4) To assay embryotoxicity, citotoxicity (chinese hamster ovary) and mutagenicity (Ames test) from hydroalcoholic extract.
