Abstract

This research project proposes a comparative study of self-built housing in developing countries, with emphasis on Brazil and Turkey. The project is based on previous studies developed in the region of Campinas, SP, Brazil, in other countries of Latin America by Dr Peter Kellett and in Turkey by Prof. Dr. Hülya Turgut Yildiz. This project is based primarily on a research of bibliographical references and documents, as well as a study and a comparative analysis on owner-built housing in both countries. Previous studies show a great similarity of this housing production in the two countries, Brazil and Turkey and this housing typology deserves a fuller characterization with regard to historical, socio-cultural, architectural as well as technical aspects. The impact of this housing production on the urban landscape will also be assessed. One of the main results of this research should be the assembly and analysis of studies of self-built housing in the two countries, Brazil and Turkey, where such constructions represent a significant part of housing production in the outlying areas of large urban centres. During the period of this research project the proponent will also participate in two scientific conferences, presenting papers related to the theme of this Project. (AU)
