Abstract The objective of this work was to confirm or to refuse a possible relationship between the local structure (first coordination shell around the modifier cations) and the crystal nucleation mechanism in silicate glasses. The EXAFS analysis has shown that glasses that nucleate homogeneously present similar neighborhoods to their isochemical crystalline phases; whereas glasses that nucleate heterogeneously do not. Moreover, materials crystallized in laboratory conditions present different medium I range structure from (nominally) the same crystalline natural mineral phase. (AU) | |
