Abstract

In this study, water and sediment quality of the most important tributary of Barra Bonita\'s reservoir (Tiete Median Superior - SP) was assessed using limnological analysis and chronic bioassays (with the planktonic cladocerans Ceriodaphnia dubia and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii) throughout 14 stations in a one-year period. This approach showed greatly impacted sites, as are the Tiete, Capivari, Lavapes and Piracicaba rivers, all of them receptors of domestic and industrial wastewater from the cities of the region. The bioassays with C. silvestrii and C. dubia confirmed these results. It was identified that on Capivari (site 1), Tiete (site 2), Piracicaba (site 4) and Lavapés (site 11) water samples, there were traces of chronic toxicity, and it was verified that chronic toxicity on Tiete (site 9), Piracicaba (site 7) and Capivari (site 1) sediment samples existed as well. The Tiete and Piracicaba rivers , with high levels of flow and low time of water residence, represent the principal contribution of contaminants to Barra Bonita\'s Reservoir, due to the transport of nutrients, metals and suspended materials f rom these environments to the Reservoir\'s area of influence, causing eutrophication. Areas with low levels of human impact, like Peixe, Capivara and Araquá rivers (with values of nutrients and metals six times lower than those of the Capivari and Tiete rivers) were also identified. These low impact rivers contribute less contaminants , through a relative dilution, transported to the reservoir. (AU)
