Abstract

Chondrichthyans are common aquatic faunal components since the Paleozoic. However, articulated remains of chondrichthyans are relatively rare; † Iansan beurleni, from the Santana Group, Romualdo Formation (Lower Cretaceous) from northeastern Brazil is an exception. There are many well-preserved 3D specimens of this species in collections, but few publications are devoted to describing its anatomy and relationships. The aim of this work was to describe the skeletal anatomy of † Iansan beurleni and perform a morphological comparative study including extant and fossils guitarfishes. The comparative study of the main skeletal complex shows a pattern in the branchial arches and clasper shared among guitarfish taxa. The comparative study provided morphological characters that were used in a phylogenetic analysis. Using a heuristic search, 60 characters relative to skeleton and dermal elements were analysed under maximum parsimony. The strict consensus tree obtained resolves † Iansan beurleni in a clade with extant Rhinobatidae, Platyrhinidae and Mesozoic guitarfish taxa from Europe, Lebanon and Morocco. Additionally, guitarfishes were recovery as a monophyletic group for the first time in a cladistic analysis, supported by characters of the branchial arches and clasper skeleton (AU)
