Abstract

This thesis presents a systematization of the art direction concepts and practices in the Brazilian audiovisual production, with specificity in television drama works, with the research corpus the miniseries Suburbia (2012), directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho for Globo Network TV. The presented approach includes a survey of theoretical and empirical data derived from the production universe of art direction, as well as a mapping of focused academic productions on this theme, to subsequently draw an understanding of the role's processes in the supply chain of a television station, particularly in the institutional context of Globo Network. Based on this repertoire, the research is directed towards a definition of the 'place' of art direction in the director Luiz Fernando Carvalho's creative process, whose work on the main structural elements of the art project - the scenery, the costumes and the makeup - are enhanced by the visual experimentation of languages. To corroborate the findings reached, the study ends with an analysis of the visuals built in Suburbia, considering the conceptual relations between narrative, staging and art direction, and its visual projections in the miniseries images. This work brings an understanding of the art direction as a research field by itself, since it is one of the main aesthetic instances of audiovisual image, being responsible for the material design of the spaces of diegesis, and being active in the building of layers of meaning in filmic and television pictures (AU)
