Abstract

Resistance training is beneficial in the treatment and prevention of chronic diseases and increasing physical fitness and health. In this sense they are increasing the investigations in order to find simple and effective tools and inexpensive to carry out this type of training. Aims: This research aimed to: compare the effects of resistance training with elastic tubing to the effects of conventional resistance training on muscle strength, functional capacity, and quality of life of apparently healthy adults insufficiently active physically, in addition to evaluating the strength, muscular stress and functional capacity of COPD patients undergoing resistance training with elastic tubing and weight machines. Methods: For the first aim, we assessed muscle strength (dynamometry), functional capacity (six minute walk test - 6MWT) and quality of life related to health (SF-36) of apparently healthy adults insufficiently physically active, and the second aim, was evaluated strength (grip strength), muscle stress (CK) and functional capacity (6MWT) of patients with COPD, before during and after resistance training (three months) with elastic tubing and weight machines. Conclusions: Resistance training with elastic tubing promoted positive effects on muscle strength and functional capacity of insufficiently active adults and patients with COPD. With improved quality of life in under-active adults. These effects were similar to those found in conventional resistance training. Levels post workout muscle stress ensured normal dose-response training in individuals with COPD. (AU)
