Abstract

Studies of modern techniques in geotechnical research are advancing every year in order to obtain faster and more practical results with greater accuracy. The electrical resistivity is gaining attention due to its environmental appeal, since getting this measure is through the imposition of a flow of electrical current in a certain material. But the interpretation of results in tropical soil is hampered by the variables involved, such as non saturation and clay minerals. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the influence that the suction present in unsaturated soils have on the values of resistivity / conductivity. It was also possible to analyze the soil water retention curves obtained by the different trajectories, drying and moistening, watching his interference in the electrical resistivity values. These paths represent the flow of water in the soil during the year, as the wet and dry seasons. This study is important in arid and tropical regions, where soils are mainly feature low moisture near the surface and may undergo alternate cycles of drying and wetting, and thus changing the suction values. They used three soils: loamy sand residual source of Sandstone Bauru, taken from Waste Landfill Solid Bauru; residual sandy clay diabase, from the Piracicaba State Airport; and a fine sand with little clay, removal of erosion along the stream Água Comprida. In each test were obtained: electrical resistivity, soil temperature and fluid temperature, moisture content, degree of saturation and void ratio. For water retention curve in the soil, it used the method of filter paper in course of drying and wetting. The format of the retention curve depends, among other factors, the type of soil and the size and distribution of pores. From the results obtained it is possible to evaluate the influence of the degree of saturation and therefore the suction in the soil and establish relationships between the suction and the value obtained from the resistivity testing. In addition to checking the differences when the soil has hysteresis. (AU)
