Abstract

The quality of building designs is discussed, for the purpose of cooperate with the development of a quality control system for building designs. The introduction of quality concepts in construction is also discussed, in accordance with the principles and theories of Production Engineering. This work recognizes design activity as being the sole informative source essential to construction. The quality of the design process directly influences the efficiency of ali the phases of construction, and its effective control determines the design activity success. Some case studies were carried out, aiming to identify and characterize the design activity in construction enterprises and design offices as well as identifying initiatives of quality improvement. The results of these case studies along with a theoretical analysis form the basis to propose some guidelines for the quality control in building designs. It is concluded that design activity is one of the most important phases in building construction, and that initiatives to improve its quality will contribute to the evolution of the entire construction process.
