Abstract

This work examines the relationship between the notions of diagnosis of the times and decline of experience (Verfall der Erfahrung) from essential writings to the philosophical developments made by Walter Benjamin in the 1930s. Assuming the central role of the theme of transformations on experience to Benjamins diagnosis, duly justified in the introductory chapters, the argumentation is built on (i) the reconstitution of the genesis and the conceptual twists operated in the conception of experience (Erfahrung), from its early idealism to its interdependency concerning the conception of lived experience (Erlebnis) that characterizes Benjamin`s later writings. Then, in order to fill any possible gaps, (ii) the attention is turned to concepts related to those of experience and lived experience, as well as to how they articulate together the theoretical prism according to which Benjamin read his own time. Finally, (iii) considering the hard core of The Arcades Project and the planned book on Baudelaire namely, Charles Baudelaire: a Lyric Poet in the Era of High Capitalism , it is intended to sketch the outlines of some of the most important material elements of Benjamin`s diagnosis, in order to allow an understanding of how the concepts mobilized in the previous chapters guide it and help in its illumination.
