Abstract

Reclamed water from sewage treatment plants utilizing domestic, home houses or health centers can be used for non-potable aplications such as agriculture, gardening, public parks, field irrigation and aquifer recharge. The use of treated sanitary wastewater, besides reducing environmental impacts to water bodies and soil, also has agronomic attractive, since it is a way of recycling nutrients and water. In this sense, the culture chosen for evaluation of this practice was the rose, which is considered an ornamental plant more susceptible to environmental stress, and was evaluated as a test plant when was being subjected to irrigation with treated and conditioned sanitary effluent from a hospital center. The culture was done in prepared soil in a protected environment on the campus of Unicamp, Campinas-SP. The effluent used for irrigation was from a simplified system for domestic wastewater treatment. The irrigation system was for drip. The soil was monitored for fertility (pH, EC, Na, Ca, Mg, K, P), determination of the SAR, and total contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb The harvested crop was rated as commercial standards, through quality and productivity. The soil showed no statistical difference when comparing the treatments used in the research both when evaluating the soil fertility or the levels of heavy metals. There was also no statistical difference concerning the quality of the crop and the productivity was higher when using this source of water for irrigation during the 18 months of research. Therefore the effluent used in this work can be used as a source of water irrigation without causing damage to productivity and crop quality (AU)
