Abstract

Urban public spaces are desired with the duty of making more pluralistic urban life. On the principles of citizenship, these places are permeated by the meeting and the diversity of groups and individuals that animate the public life of the city. Nevertheless, the contemporary cities also face problems in many ways, from those linked to social issues such as insecurity and segregation to those of environmental dimensions, related to the deterioration of urban areas. This context creates a insecurities scenario about the importance of public spaces in cities. This research aimed to understand, in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, the possibilities of urban experiences in this context of decline and the rise of public spaces. From a descriptive-phenomenological method, the idea was, through field work, to describe and to analyze the daily dynamics that animate the chosen places ¿ Portugal Park (Lagoa do Taquaral), the Visconde de Indaiatuba Square, Green Park Monsenhor José Emilio Salim and Cambarás Wood - from the concept of place-ballet. The aim of this method was both to indicate the reasons for possible declines in the use of these urban public spaces, and to identify their potential and the creation of new forms of uses. The results of the research were largely influenced by the contingencies found in urban experiences in the fields work. Described and analyzed, sometimes the experiences revealed the elements that reinforced the contemporary social experience crisis in urban centers and, at other times, they demonstrated how urban public spaces can be understood as "opening places", in the other words, places that allow the possibility of meeting and communion between different individuals and social groups. This double condition which urban public spaces had allowed to indicate some aspects of how urban public policies have been made and how they could be articulated in order to answer the specifics of collective demands of each public space, according to the circumstances involving its geographical context, profile and diversity of users and their degrees of physical and social accessibility (AU)
