Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the stiffness of the lung and hepatic parenchyma of canine fetuses in late pregnancy of bitches, through elastography ARFI (Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse), determining qualitative and quantitative standards, in order to predict the maturity of canine fetuses. Were evaluated 15 female dogs primiparous and multiparous, with an average weight of 7.03 ± 3.64 kg, mean age 2.5 ± 1.21 years, of various races. After conducting preliminary exams and checked the healthiness of the animals, these were submitted to the conventional ultrasound examinations and elastography (quantitative and qualitative method ARFI) of lung and liver tissue, with the use of the ultrasound equipment ACUSON S2000 / SIEMENS and specific software. The examinations were performed daily, ever 12 hours, from the eighth week of pregnancy until the day of birth, sonographic findings of lung and fetal livers, being checked, echogenicity values, shear rate of the evaluated parenchyma (elastography quantitative assessment) and their rigidity characteristics (elastography qualitative assessment). The experimental lineation was completely randomized and used 5% significance level for all tests. The animals did not present any clinical and obstetric changes during pregnancy and birth. The newborns presented themselves healthy and normal. ARFI elastography was performed consistently and without any difficulty. Qualitative elastography of lung parenchyma of canine fetuses did not appear deformable, demonstrating homogeneous image, medium gray coloration to the light and hard. For quantitative evaluation, the average shear speed was of (CI = 0.84 ± 0.11 m/s), and the velocities were statistically similar in all experimental time (p = 0.69). In the qualitative assessment, the liver parenchyma of canine fetuses did not appear deformable, being homogeneous and medium gray to dark and greater rigidity to the lung tissue, in every moment of collection. In the qualitative assessment, the liver parenchyma of canine fetuses did not appear deformable, being homogeneous and medium gray to dark and greater rigidity to the lung tissue, in every moment of collection. For the quantitative evaluation, the average shear speed was (CI= 0.98 ± 0.12 m/s). There was a significant effect of time for the mean values of pixels number, and the minimum and maximum pixel intensity of lung tissue, these values decreased significantly from 96 to 24 hours before birth and subsequently the values increase to the time of birth (p = 0.04). The heterogeneity of pixel of the lungs of fetuses did not vary significantly during the last week of gestation and there was no significant difference (p = 0.32). (AU)
