Abstract

Have a life as the main object of study is going into a shaky ground of multiple relationships, because a research of an intellectual way has as premiss the convergence between the author, the works and their production environment. For us, interpret the intellectual journey of Cecília Westphalen (1927-2004), during the period from 1950 to 1998 implies investigate the uniqueness’ life in the tensions from Brazilian historiography’s field from the second half of the twentieth century, time of designing professionalization craft. Our central question lies in its construction of itself as a historian affiliated with the economic history and social quantitative, practice that has learned in historiographical shifts to the capital of French historiography. The History as a social science, the dialectic of duration, economic cycles, the series, the informatics, became part of their language in education and research. It is in historiography à la Annales, that she identifies the sign of scientific able to consolidate the academic status of historical research in the country. To understand this way of being a historian is fundamental the historicizing of their meetings and academic disagreements configured in different spaces of sociability and production of knowledge, such as the Federal University of Paraná, VIª Section de l’École Pratique des Hautes Études/École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, the University Teachers of History Association and the Brazilian Historical Research Society. Therefore, we analyze the Brazilian history reconfiguration through the history of these institutions. Thus, we mobilize the Westphalen’s intellectual production, his correspondence network, academic meetings chronicals and departmental meetings records. The sociology of Pierre Bourdieu’s academic field, the pragmatic reflection about Gérard Noiriel’s history and the problem of the historian’s social place in Michel de Certeau guide the look and instigate issues that pass over all this historiographical project.
