Abstract

In her books, the Portuguese writer Maria Gabriela Llansol (1931-2008) builds up a community of different voices that proposes impossible meetings in the course of history. This research focuses on her 1970s and early 1980s writing in order to analyze the textual presence of the Spanish mystic poet Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591) who has become a community member in her work. On one hand I am interested in reflecting on the mystics contributions for this community by means of reading effects from his texts, viewpoint contrasts and limit experiences in language and body. On the other hand, I aim to explore both the re-elaboration of thoughts and the authorship of a 16th-century poet in a contemporary writing that considers historical and literary discourses from the margins In that sense, I shall consider Barthes and other essayist theories on authorship, authority, writing and effect, as well as ideas from Ethics as affect, otherness, hospitality and community.
