Abstract

Introduction: Auditory processing (AP) is defined as the way the nervous system deals with auditory information. The receptive vocabulary (RV) refers to the words that the child is able to comprehend. Decoding and reading comprehension (RC) involve abilities related to sensory, cognitive, linguistic, and social skills that enables the reader to comprehend a written materials. In this regard, verifying the association between such skills in 5th grade students is relevant, since the auditory integrity, efficient auditory comprehension and the knowledge of words meaning facilitates the process of decoding and reading comprehension. Objective: To verify the influence of the AP and the RV in RC of 5th grade in elementary school of students from public and private schools. Methods: Thirty-four students from 5th grade of elementary school (16 from public school and 18 from private school) were assessed. The figure-ground skill, the association of auditory and visual stimulus, binaural integration for linguistic sounds, temporal ordering, inter-hemispheric transfer and temporal resolution were assessed using auditory behavioral tests. The RV was evaluated with the Teste de Vocabulário por Figuras USP and RC with PROLEC test. A socioeconomic level questionnaire was applied. Results: There was a significant difference between the socioeconomic level of students from both school\'s. Children of the private school obtained better performance, in absolute values, in all applied tests. There was an association between AP and RC, and between RV and RC only in the public school group. Conclusion: The school type influenced in all experimental tests performance. The AP and the RV can predict the public school students RC performance. It can be assumed that auditory skills and lexical enlargement stimulation (since pre-literacy stages) gives children opportunities to develop reading comprehension (AU)
