Abstract

In This monograph we discuss the relationship between the intensification of the internal slave trade in the Empire of Brazil, after the end of the Atlantic slave trade in 1850, and the growing mobilization of slaves in the final decades of slavery in the Southeast Brazil. Focusing on the city of Campinas and in the period 1860-1888, we examine civil and criminal trials involving enslaved people, runaway captives¿ announcements and records of tax payments on transactions of purchase and sale of slaves. In this sources, we look at the multiple experiences and choices made by slaves brought to the city of Campinas through the internal trade, emphasizing the formation of new family and solidarity networks, as well as strategies to get out of bondage (through manumission, flights or crimes) (AU)
