Abstract

This research aims to study the manners in which Claude Lévi-Strauss and Mário de Andrade construct the image of the city of São Paulo in their texts, bearing in mind that these imagery constructions were traversed not only by different points of view and by the contact with the intellectual milieu but also by political conflicts happening in the city during the years of 1930s. To develop such objective, it is necessary to analyze their professional and personal paths and their encounter in São Paulo. Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009), the French anthropologist, came to Brazil in 1935 to lecture Sociology at the newly created Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras, in Universidade de São Paulo (USP), and to develop ethnographical researches about indigenous societies. By the time he lived in São Paulo, he inserted himself among the intellectual milieu, by means of the Sociedade de Etnologia e Folclore, which was under Mário de Andrade¿s direction, and of O Estado de São Paulo newspaper. Mário de Andrade (1893-1945), in turn, graduated from Conservatório Dramático e Musical de São Paulo, took part of "Semana da Arte Moderna" in 1922; he directed São Paulo¿s cultural department from 1935 to 1938 and was also an assistant at the department of national historical and artistic heritage. Besides Lévi-Strauss and Mário de Andrade¿s texts that particularly refer to the city of São Paulo, the research makes use of other primary sources: management reports from the period when Fábio Prado was the mayor (1934-1938), archives from the culture department and the letters between the anthropologist and the Brazilian writer. Making the primary sources dialogue with the bibliography will improve the research regarding the construction process of São Paulo¿s imagery in their works (AU)
