Abstract

This thesis is the result of an idea born during the Master, when I conducted a study on the dynamics of the relationship between the Mato Grosso¿s society, the "ribeirinhos", and the nature in the northern Pantanal from 1870 to 1930. At the time of identification, location and selection of documents about the extensive flooded area, we encountered a multiple and plural universe regarding the spaces, social groups and daily activities. But what caught my attention the most were the cultural factors (blood and neighborhood ties, solidarity, cronyism and loyalty, besides the representation, appropriation and practice over nature in the arenas of tensions of the individuals involved), which engendered a local logic, pervaded by codes and visible and invisible rules. Despite the fact that I have studied these aspects with regard to smallholders of the border of navigable rivers in the northern Pantanal region, I chose to select and transcribe a part of the documentation that could be used in a future work, and that give emphasis to great farms and not to small and medium ones. This is precisely the aim of this thesis: seeking to understand the cultural universe represented and practiced by a portion of the inhabitants of the floodable region: the aggregates and comrades, entering their habitus to understand their daily lives¿ actualization of rationality and logic. Therefore I will use a well-diversified documentary typology, of which a part has been dealt previously: maps, tables, reports, messages and speeches of provincial and state governments, criminal processes; in addition to the reports and chronicles of national and foreign travelers (AU)
