Abstract

Hot forging is a metal forming process in which a billet is deformed in various shapes with large plastic deformations. The advantages of this process consist of high dimensional accuracy, improvement of mechanical properties, and low waste compared to other forming processes, stimulating an increase in its application. The objective of this research is the development of multi-directional forging using a hydraulic press with five actuators. The proposal is to cause incremental deformations during workpiece forging with minimal or without flash formation, avoiding great loss of material, and to demonstrate the possibility of achieving more complex details without requiring large loads or even without the need of many steps, when confronted to the conventional process. In this sense, the finite element method was used to simulate the process and calculate forging loads, temperatures, stresses, and von Mises stress distribution. The numerical predictions have shown that the multidirectional process present no risk of failure and is feasible because it allows to obtain products without flash and with sharp corners, which is not possible in the conventional process, without the need of many steps and without waste of raw material (AU)
