Abstract

This research consisted of a study from the personal archive of Júlio César de Mello e Souza. That collection belongs to the Memory's Education Center of Unicamp, the CME (Unicamp) and is called "Malba Tahan Documental Fund". The holder of the collection, Júlio César de Mello e Souza, also known by the pseudonym Malba Tahan, was a teacher, writer and speaker. In addition, he worked in the academia and published several works recognised as didactic and useful to teachers and students of mathematics. During his time as lecturer and writer he gathered documents of various nature. Today those documents form the personal collection of the Malba Tahan Documental Fund, at CME/FE-Unicamp. The collection is composed of thirteen archive units and this research explores part of that collection, which corresponds to the first archive unit, called Archive Notebooks. In the archive notebooks there is a volume with 4,151 documents, distributed into 69 different types. This analysis interrogates the network of contacts mobilized by Júlio César de Mello and Souza during the exercise of his activities as teacher, writer and speaker. The methodology used is supported by several authors, among them Artières (1998), Ribeiro (1998), Fraiz (2000), Camargo (2009), Paulilo (2015) and Sirinelli (2003). The organization of the analysis took place following three steps. The first one dealt with the presentation of the biography of Júlio César de Mello e Souza. Subsequently, the quantitative data from the study of the archive notebooks were presented. Finally, the last chapter turns to the relationship of that documentation with the cultivation of sociability. This last step presented the study of a set of documents grouped in the communication category, from the characteristics presented in chapter 2. The Letters were the documents with the greatest presence in this investigation, both for the volume it represents and for the reach of the network of contacts. Thus, those letters were the basis for the pursuit of an understanding from the part of the universe that composed the social fabric of Júlio César de Mello e Souza (AU)
