Abstract

Insects and other arthropods, when associated with decaying bodies, can help in the progress or conclusion of investigative processes. The main applications of these arthropods within the forensic sciences concern the estimate of the postmortem interval (PMI), inference if there was movement of the body, and investigation of the possible cause of death, in the later case, in particular, linked to situations where the victim had administration of toxic substances antemortem. Factors such as temperature, relative humidity, variation in the photoperiod, type of food substrate, among others, can alter the development rate of insects, consequently, causing errors in the calculation of PMI. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immature development rates of Chrysomya albiceps and C. megacephala (Diptera: Calliphoridae) under the effect of two variables: food resources (tissues from heart, liver, tongue, intestine, muscle and lung of domestic swine - Sus scrofa L.) and temperatures (15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5, and 35°C) to determine the thermal constant and the minimum development threshold for each species. Results show that the food substrate and temperature influenced the development time, mass and length of the immatures of both species. Values of basal temperature, thermal constant (k), and development rate equations for each larval stage are presented. These information is expected to be used as base for a most accurate PMI estimative (AU)
