Abstract

The starting point of this research is the painting Après-midi en Hollande, by Dutch painter Willem Roelofs, which belongs to Museu Mariano Procópio in Juiz de For a. Besides the particular story of this artwork, it research discusses the literature written about its author and the relationship between 17th and 19th century in his work. Despite the specificity of this subject, from the observation of the context in which this painting was presented to the public it is possible to catch a glimpse of Roelofs` insertion in the Dutch and international scenes, as well as his modus operandi. Such context is the World Fair of 1889 in Paris, to which the artist sent three paintings named Après-midi en Hollande, Bords du Rhin en Hollande and Polder à Noorden en Hollande. The first one, the main subject of our study, was painted in relatively big dimensions and represents a Dutch plain where a cattle herd of nine cows is resting alongside a canal. The whole picture is made of thick layers of paint, repeating tones everywhere in the scene. In order to create this artwork, as well as the other two, Roelofs started from outdoor sketches made through the observation of nature. The initial studies are always followed by others, that clearly show the painter`s decisions and his relationship with his motifs. At the fair, Roelofs acted as an organiser of the Dutch exhibition, which was praised by the French critics and won some medals. Roelofs himself sold Après-midi en Hollande for three thousand guilder to Mariano Procópio Museum`s founder and was awarded a silver medal by the international jury. In this dissertation, this painting`s history is reconstructed from consultation of primary fonts, as well as from observation and reading of the artist`s sketches and writings that allow for an archaeology of his visual repertoire and work procedures (AU)
