Abstract

This work aimed to identify the constitutive psychosocial characteristics of the process of Transforming Encounter between homeless people involved (or not) with criminality and segments of the civil society, viewed as their fixed points - supporting points. Those characteristics enable a deeper understanding of the human being\'s Resilience, which was conceived as \'\'the human capacity to cope with life\'s adversities, to overcome them and to become stronger or even be transformed because of them\". The concept of Resilience was associated with the notion of Agape, defined as \"love for one\'s fellow humans\", which, in turn, was articulated with the concepts of self and false self. A five-year longitudinal study, based on Life Histories, was carried out by means of open and semi-structured interviews, photographs, registers in a Field Diary, and collections of drawings and crafts made by the observation subjects: six homeless people from downtown São Paulo, some of them involved in crime and drug addiction, and two non-homeless retired teachers, who established a relationship with them in order to help. For data interpretation, the researcher used concepts pertinent to certain theories of Psychology, History, Geography, Anthropology, Sociology, to Edgar Morin\'s Complexity approach and to the Systemic approach, attempting to build a dialog between different disciplines. From the analysis of the phenomenon - in which the mode of dwelling in the street emerged as an extreme existential situation, marked by exclusion, favoring involvements with drugs and criminality, as well as the development of feelings of distrust and revolt -, the research revealed the transformation process of the homeless in contact with people who were their positive supporting points, who became their \'models-pathways\', human bridges that - overcoming relational abysses - promoted the Transforming Encounter. New emerging configurations manifested themselves in their psyches. These new psychic configurations, however, had difficulties to endure without the effective support of the State and of the civil society. The study considered the need to raise the society\'s awareness towards the problem of the homeless, as well as the development of a policy and culture of inclusion. Finally, the study proposed that the concepts of Agape, Transforming Encounter and Resilience - when disseminated and applied to processes of elucidation and education- may guide the relationship between men not only in the scope of individuality but also in the economic, political and social spheres, illuminating what today is called Solidarity Society or even Solidarity Globalization.
