Abstract

Separated only by a brief period of time, the novels Sonhos d¿ouro [Dreams of gold] (1872), by José de Alencar, and A mão e a luva [The hand and the glove] (1874), by Machado de Assis, have in common the social ambition theme, in a scenery of the end of a century that had modern and liberal ideas. In this work, we suggest a (re)reading of these novels, relating them in their similarities and differences, having as a constant concern inserting them into the intellectual debates identified in the 19th Century press. Therefore, we aim to investigate possible dialogues, borrowing, and reciprocities that could have influenced the authors¿ experiences, and their readers from that time. Specifically, we aim to approach the conception and reception of the female profiles represented by Guida and Guiomar, whose stories are marked, respectively, by the appearance in a prominent social place, and by the moral imperfection of a poor origin, added by the desire of an urgent social climbing (AU)
