Abstract

Maria Esther Bueno was an important Brazilian and international tennis player, she won the biggest and most recognized tennis tournaments in the world. The tennis player was inserted in the sport in a time in which the participation of the women was already allowed, but less frequent and diversified when compared to the current period. The objective of this research was to understand the processes that enabled Maria Esther Bueno to become a great athlete in an era of low insertion of women in the competitive sport in Brazil. We analyzed the incidences of the tennis player in matters of the newspapers "O Estado de São Paulo" and "O Globo". The first was sponsor of the tennis player, innovating in the choice of the athlete, because it was a period in which women were still entering the competitive sporting environment in Brazil and essential so that she could devote herself exclusively to tennis and to make their international trips to the major championships of the period. In addition to the sponsorship, the tennis career was marked by her innovative offensive game, which made her the best player in the world and winner of the biggest tennis tournaments, and the clothes tailored exclusively for her, favoring her movements and sports gestures. These are now considered virile and efficient, sometimes delicate. Just like her clothes, now related to the female universe with colors and cuts, now with movement and efficiency. This duality in the representation of Maria Esther Bueno was recurrent, representing a sporting genre, that is, a relation between feminine and masculine aspects when constituting the elements of the tennis career. This sporting genre and this way of portraying female athletes was relevant to the transition from a non-institutionalized practice to a sportive competitive sneaker. Researching the career of Maria Esther Bueno has shown us the elements she has propagated through her achievements, the innovation of her potent game and her specialized clothes and brought us the reflection among the conservative and innovative elements when representing a woman in a competitive environment (AU)
