Abstract

This research consists in the interpretation of the religious practices of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the Archdiocese of Mariana linked to the spirituality of the Good Shepherd and the representation of the priest as a shepherd of souls. This study was conducted by analyzing the ecclesiastical trajectory of the Monsignor José Silvério Horta (1859-1933) that, through his performances and narratives, was built as an exemplary model of shepherd of souls in Minas Gerais. In his (auto) biographical writings, central documentation of our research, Monsignor Horta outlined a religious profile of the strengthening of the institution and incorporating the socio-cultural demands of the population. To execute our analysis, we rely on an approach of the cultural history of religions, which aims to understand the religious practices within a society through its representations, mediations and appropriations (AU)
