Abstract | |
In the period of the Iberian Crowns\' Union (1580-1640), Portugal was a monarchy with an absent king. Only two times, when Philip II (1581-1583) and Philip III (1619) journeyed to Portugal, the situation was momentarily changed. This thesis deals with the expectations involved in the construction of the kings\' image and memory during those journeys, as seen in the celebrations organized by the Portuguese cities and in the publications that appeared after those events. The purpose of this thesis is to elaborated an interpretation of the political conditions based on the cultural practices of the period - the formation of the Iberic baroque culture - , in order to discuss the representation mechanisms of the kingship, the appropriations of such mechanisms by the public, and the survival of traditional power relations among individuals and local groups (AU) |
