Abstract

Assuming the Movement Theory of Control (Hornstein 1999, 2001, Boeckx, Hornstein and Nunes 2010) and its extension to null subjects in Brazilian Portuguese (Ferreira 2000, Rodrigues 2004), this thesis experimentally investigates the interpretation of epithets in finite embedded clauses associated with verbs like convencer convince in Brazilian Portuguese. There is some controversy in the literature regarding the possibilities for intra-sentential coreference available to epithets in this configuration (Ferreira 2000, Rodrigues 2004, Modesto 2000, 2011, Nunes 2013, 2019), with direct implications for the analysis of null subjects in Brazilian Portuguese in terms of movement. Our experimental results show that (i) an epithet in this configuration may take the matrix object as its antecedent if the clause associated with convencer is finite, but not if it is infinitival; and (ii) an epithet immediately dominated by an adjunct clause may take the matrix object for its antecedent. Put together, these results provide direct evidence for Rodrigues (2004) proposal that the finite clause associated with convencer is an adjunct of sorts and further support to the movement analysis of null subjects in Brazilian Portuguese.
