Abstract

The study of the set of works by the Portuguese architect João Mendes Ribeiro (Coimbra, 1960) is the central theme of this research. It is based on the notion of interdisciplinarity and the connection between architecture and scenography, seeking to recognize the intersection of these concepts and their possible correspondences. The main aim of this work is to understand the repercussion of the architectural action in the scenographic works and the influence of the reasoning used in the scenography on the materiality of the architectural project. The research seeks to recognize the theoretical, methodological and technical resources that made possible the relationship and reciprocal influences between these two fields - architecture and scenography. It sticks to five works, among the vast production of the architect, in which architectural and scenographic elements come together in the way of reconfiguring the space: scenography of the play Uma visitação (1995, Teatro Académico Gil Vicente, Coimbra), Visual Arts Center (1997 -2003, Coimbra), scenography of the play Vermelhos, Negros e Ignorantes (1998, Teatro Nacional São João, Porto), Arquipélago Contemporary Art Center (2007-2015, Ribeira Grande, Portugal) and the remodeling of the Dias da Silva loft (2013 -2017, Coimbra). The research is developed based on the analysis of these projects and on the set of critical authors of their works, such as José Manuel das Neves (2016), Manuel Graça Dias and Susana Ventura (2003) and Désirée Pedro (2011). It is also structurally based on the architect\'s own doctorate (2008) and in the literature that addresses the concepts of interdisciplinarity (ARANHA, OLIVEIRA in SILVA, 2010), and scenographic, according to authors such as Howard (2015) and Pavis (1999).
