Abstract

In this dissertation, I propose a critical reflection on possible ways of interpreting the poetry attributed to the Eighteenth-century Luso-Brazilian poet Inácio José de Alvarenga Peixoto (c.1744-1792). In order to carry out this discussion and deconstruct the hegemonic interpretation of that poetry, I expand the analyses I have developed during my Masters Thesis Alvarenga Peixoto e(m) seu tempo of some of the most significant texts from Alvarenga Peixotos critical fortune from the early nineteenth century to the present days. Then, I propose a brief discussion on the idea of Arcady, which results in the generic determination Arcadism used to designate the Luso-Brazilian poetry produced during the 18th century. I have also closely discussed the poetic and rhetoric doctrines from the 18th century, mainly the Arte Poética, written by Cândido Lusitano. Last but not least, I mobilize the results of the mentioned discussions to reinterpret the poems attributed to Alvarenga Peixoto. This reinterpretation does not aim to handle every semantic aspect of those poetic texts, but to demonstrate how we can establish dialogues between those texts and the poetic and rhetoric doctrines of Luso-Brazilian eighteenth century. Overall, this dissertation intends to expand the research I have been developing about that poetry since my Masters degree and will keep developing after the conclusion of this PhD , conferring to the the materiality of the poetry attributed to Alvarenga Peixoto a central position on the debate over the colonial productions of the Luso-Brazilian Eighteenth Century.
