Narrating a historical period is contingent upon political, social, historical, cultural, and temporal matters. When it comes to the 20th-century dictatorships in South America’s Southern Cone and particularly the Brazilian Dictatorship of 1964-1985, that "what was" (or "what is") is still being produced. This dissertation investigates the production of contemporary Brazilian literature written after the year 2000, with a temporal distancing of over thirty-five years from the Brazilian Dictatorship, mostly, but also those of the Southern Cone, more generally, and its formal, aesthetic and thematic relation with those events. This literature deals, in the present, with constant tensions from a still unresolved past, reclaiming and remembering what was/is sometimes forgotten, sometimes underestimated or even denied. To understand these tensions, this work aims to understand the ways in which the dictatorship is narrated in contemporary literature: how it marks contemporary lived experiences, bodies and writing; how it is written in that which is still denied or silenced, often spectrally, after the year 2000, and what it unveils (or perpetuates). Not so much as something that has passed, belonging to another time, literature mobilizes coexisting temporalities in a dialogue: it situates the dictatorship in contact with the present time as a force of the past that still mobilizes and violates, and as a critical discourse that can produce and imagine new futures. This dissertation is particularly interested in works that distance themselves and which, within the limits, contradictions and anachronisms of its own time, formalize the different temporalities with which they deal. In these works, the past demands a space, to be recalled in the present, and is built as a field of dispute where what counts is that what is remembered but also, and mostly, how it is remembered and narrated, and when it is remembered and narrated.
