Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the fictional work of Natália Correia (1923-1993), a Portuguese writer and cultural activist, directing the analysis to the course of female authorship literature in Portugal and to the concept of “matrism”, proposed by the author. Through the rescue of this conceptual term, the objective is to question whether this proposal would not be a way for the author to list and consolidate avant la lettre a special and very particular form of feminism, in which she prioritizes, above all, gender equality. The clear refusal of female authorship in literary history is a hallmark of our chauvinist culture, which, in addition to being responsible for fomenting various forms of violence and suppression of rights, also encourages the maintenance of a male, white and heterosexual canon. Therefore, it was relevant to reflect, first, on the development and (or not) female participation in History and its different political and ideological currents that influenced feminisms in Europe, to later identify this spirit in the literary production of women in Portugal and, more specifically, in Natália Correia’s politic-literary project. For this purpose, the analysis will focus, in particular, on two of his fiction texts: A Madona (1968) and As Núpcias (1992). We understand that these titles, when touching on themes such as the freedom of the female body, eroticism, androgyny, incest, criticism of Christian restrictive concepts, and, mainly, the concept of matrism, proposed by Natália Correia, end up also involving proposals for the emancipation of texts by feminine / feminist authorship, so important in the occupation of women’s space in literature and society. In A Madona, for example, published in 1968, in the midst of the Salazar dictatorship, it was possible identify, in addition to the narrative specificities of our author, the political-thematic aspects regarding the defense of sexual freedom of the female body that runs through the text, since the identity of this madonna is totally distant from the historical imaginary of the canonical maternal and christian woman. In As Núpcias, the idea of Matria and matrismo itself acquire new developments, as an addition to what has been sedimented by Natália Correia since the 1960s, assuming a transgressive and radical interface when she defends incest as sacred. In addition, with the symbol Frátria, Natália Correia presents her proposal in relation to what she believes as a new expression of national identity, erasing the idea of nation and family strengthened in / on masculine values (Pátria-Pai). Finally, it is also important for us to see how matrism advances to the present day from the hypothesis of the existence of a post-matrism feminism. With the entry of the post prefix, matrism subverts and, at the same time, legitimizes the original idea of our author, with the updating of its use based on the premises of the fourthwave feminism, gender theories and the most recent queer theory. Finally, the term post-matrism appears as a tool for the analysis of two novels in the so-called brand new Portuguese literature, namely Trans Iberic Love (2013), by Raquel Freire and O meu amante de domingo (2014), by Alexandra Lucas Coelho.
